Local Authorities serve and are part of a local community and that community is diverse and complicated. To ensure access to those services and a voice for all involved is difficult but fundamental. In addition as major employers Local Authorities have a responsibility to find the best people for jobs and to manage those people once employed in a fair and equitable way that will help them achieve their full potential. Valuing diversity and equality are underpinning values for most Local Authorities. This course provides a basic introduction to the subject and a chance to explore the issues. Equality and Diversity is concerned with values and attitudes that for some people may be deeply ingrained. Changes in behaviour cannot therefore be guaranteed. However, the course will not only raise awareness and challenge assumptions but set out legal and organisational requirements.
